Stop Overpaying for Fruit Drying Lamps
Let’s be honest: a lot of high-end food machinery is overpriced just because of the logo on the side. The physics of heating fruit doesn’t change based on the brand name. When one of your IR lamps burns out on the dehydration line, you don’t want a project. You just want a replacement that fits, plugs in, and works without you having to tear apart the control cabinet. Getting the fit right Here is the thing: you have to be obsessive about the specs. If your system calls for 230V/1500W, you can’t just “close enough” it. Plugging a lamp into the wrong circuit is a fast track to a dead bulb or a blown fuse. Then there’s the physical size. It sounds trivial, but if that quartz tube is even 2mm too long, it’s not going into the bracket. Too short? Now you’ve got cold spots at the edges of your conveyor. That leads to uneven drying, and that’s how you end up with spoiled fruit. The guts of the lamp We stick with high-purity quartz glass because it can handle the shock of being turned on and off rapidly. For fruit, we use short-wave IR. It actually gets inside the produce to pull moisture out from the center, rather than just scorching the skin. To keep them from burning out, we use a halogen gas fill. It basically catches the tungsten as it evaporates and puts it back on the filament. It keeps the wire thick and the lamp alive longer. And please, check your connectors. Whether it’s an R7s or Sk15, it needs to be a tight fit. A loose connection creates a tiny electrical arc, and that heat will melt your socket right off the machine. A word of caution on power It’s tempting to jump to a higher wattage lamp to push more fruit through the line. Sure, you get more heat, but your cooling fans have to deal with that extra load. If you crank up the power without checking your ventilation, you’re risking more than just a burnt bulb. Too much “heat soak” can actually warp your machine frame or melt your conveyor belt. Keep the airflow moving, and you’ll be fine.
